What Happened

It was August 2023 when I started feeling defeated by my small business. Seven years into business and I felt like I was done! I’v had enough chaos, change, and responsibilities. I didn’t any more of it and I didn’t want anything to do with it.

Just a few weeks before August, I had two full time employees just stop showing up to work, one full time employee on vacation for 10 days and two had given their two week notice and were leaving that same week. All I had left to work with was one full time employee, myself, my husband and my daughter.

Not only was I understaffed, I was broken. I didn’t have any explanations and reasons for some of the unanswered questions from staff leaves. All I heard was that I was wrong, not good enough and I was the problem.

After seven years of being the problem, I wanted to be left alone. I wanted to go away. The thing I really loved to do and why I opened my business I started to despise. A LOT! I hated getting up to work, hearing all the complaining, my name being called across the shop and the flood of questions everyday. I was done!

My Small Business Became a Monster

I started working on plan B. I needed to make sure that I found a way to make income another way for my family. Now, I did feel called to do this years ago, but never really started it. But, I thought it was time now and I was going to do it now to get out of this hole. I started blogging and I was ready to start a coaching business. This was my plan B. Pretty good one, if I say so myself.

I started collecting all my information to get started on the selling process of my business. I set up appointments with coaches and was coming to my next coaching session with a question to the group, “What should I know about selling my business?”

When Everything Changed

December 14, 2023, I went to my coaching session with my group and started talking immediately about my exit plan. Little did I know, I was sitting in a room full of business owners who went through the exact same thing I did and they were not about to let me give up. They asked me questions to really understand the heart behind my idea. As they were poking around with all the questions gently, I broke out into tears. I couldn’t hold back all the stress much longer. The coaching session stopped abruptly and the group prayed for me right then and there. That was my first step toward healing and understanding what was happening with me and the business.

DO NOT Do it Alone!

My biggest advice to any small business owner is to connect! There is no way to become great alone. Every successful business owner has a team of people around them supporting them, cheering them on. I tried to do this business thing alone, but I got defeated by the business. I had several coaches along the way, but finding this group of people who were 5-10 years ahead of me on this road as business owners and going through the same emotions I was feeling at the moment was gold!

One key factor of this coaching group was the faith piece. The Kingdom mindset behind owning a company is so crucial! Your business is not your own. It is God’s and He wants to use it spread more of His Kingdom on this earth. And he wants us to do this well. To do it well, we must do it alongside likeminded business owners who are ahead of you.

Coaching is Key in Small Business

Go get a coach! Find a group. I found mine in my local church. Keep knocking on doors to find help. You don’t have to be defeated by the business and get knocked down like I did.
