Many successful people get up bright and early to be more productive in their life. It’s been proven to be one of the best ways to kick start your day because of the benefits it brings to a person’s life. Becoming a morning person is a thing and a lot of people do it too!
For the last several years I have reaped the benefits of being a morning person. I have accomplished certain goals with fitness and picked up new hobbies like blogging. Just these two things alone motivate me to get up early.
Some great benefits of becoming a morning person – feeling in control of your day, increase in productivity and beneficial to your health. Do you want to experience any of these?
This doesn’t mean it’s always easy to get out of bed when that alarm goes off, even if you are a morning person. Some days are just tough and hitting snooze would be nice.
Here are few tips how to become a morning person. All of these tips I use myself and have helped me become a successful morning person.

1. Set a Goal
Why do you want to get up early? If you don’t have any direction to you why you are going to get up early, you might as well sleep in.
I started with one goal in mind. Become a physically healthy mom for my kids. I used to get up at 6am before I set this goal. After setting this goal, I started getting up at 5:30am and exercising, even if I was half asleep.
Write down the things you want to accomplish and never have enough time for in the day. Then pick one, determine how much time you need to accomplish that task and set your alarm to ensure you have enough time to complete it.
2. Create a Morning Routine

Your morning hours are limited, so you need to make the best of them. Planning your time so they are moved with purpose, even if it is taking 15 minutes to wake up.
Having a morning routine helps you reach the goals you create. Being in control of your time eliminates frustration and you less flustered in the morning.
When I created a morning routine, I made sure it worked for me and all the commitments I already had going on. So, when you create your morning routine, make sure it fit your lifestyle.
Start Small Add to your morning routine, one thing at a time
When you are preparing to become a morning person, don’t make all the changes at once. You are more likely to quit on your goals that way.
My husband always tell me, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Take one new thing you would like to add to your morning routine and implement it.
The first goal I added was exercising. It took me several years before I added anymore new goals to my morning routine. I was just not ready. It was not the right time yet. Now that I feel more comfortable with getting up to exercise and can’t truly live without my morning exercise, I have added another goal to my morning routine.
Become a morning person one step at a time.
Take a Break When You Need You are not a robot, so rest every week
After years of getting up early, I have learned that taking a break from getting up so early is necessary. Some days can be pretty hard or do not go as planned. Listen to your bodies needs and understand your life circumstances.
In the beginning, when I was still building my habit of getting up at a particular time, I rarely took a break. But as I became more disciplined with my routines, I was able to regularly take a break and my body enjoyed the rest it needed.
Never Snooze the Alarm!
Ok, this was a bad habit of mine. I would be so pumped the night before to get up early and accomplish all the things. Then my alarm rings. I reach over, hit the snooze button and that’s the end of my morning routine. I would get up frustrated. Everything I set out to do and the journey to become great were just words written on a page.
DO NOT SNOOZE! How do you do that? Great question!
Keep your alarm as far away from your bed as possible! I keep mine across the room. It forces me to get up and actually turn off my alarm. At that point, I have already sprinted across my room. I put all that effort into getting out of bed and shouldn’t waste the opportunity of already waking myself up with that sprint. So, I keep moving.
Do what works for you, but just don’t snooze!
Caffeinate Yourself
I love my morning coffee! I am a big sucker for freshly roasted beans too. If you would come to my bedside with a cup of coffee at 3am, I would probably get up to just drink that coffee. I know, it’s bad. But I love a good cup of jo.
Honestly, I don’t need a lot of caffeine to get my brain to wake up. When I make my coffee at home, I typically make it 25% caffeinated. I just want enough fuel to wake me up, but not to make my body feel weird with all the jitters.
Start your morning with caffeine first, especially in the beginning stages of becoming a morning person. This will help with waking up your brain and get your gut moving too. Benefits all around.

Stay Hydrated
Cold water! It wakes you up. That’s the first benefit of drinking water.
Second, your body needs to rehydrate from the night. A solid 8 oz will rehydrate and give you that little boost you need in the morning.
I have been loving my new water bottle from Simple Modern. I am a big fan of spending money on quality products versus brands. This doesn’t mean expensive either. Don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong loving an expensive cup, but if I could find something for a lesser price with same quality, I will opt out for that for sure!

Stay off Social Media
The first thing most people do when they get up in the morning is scroll. Their brain hasn’t had time to process what just happened and the eye buggers are smearing the vision, but we are still scrolling.
This is a very addictive habit that can take up a good portion of your morning if not careful. I am very intentional about putting a screen time passcode on all social media activity on my phone. My husband has the password, so I don’t have access to social media all the time.
Block all social media from your morning routine and take this very seriously. Becoming a successful morning person requires intentionality. This is where it starts when it comes to eliminating time wasters.
Alarm Clock
There are several different options when it comes to alarms. Most people use their phone for an alarm. That’s what I do. It’s convenient and everything on one device.

Be Consistent Stick to the time, especially in the beginning
When creating a new habit, especially in the beginning, make sure to stick with it. Habits are created when done consistently over time.
If you have set your mind to get up at 5am, do it and don’t stop. Don’t get up one day at 5am, the next 4am and then third day 6am. You will confuse your body, become more exhausted that you were before and eventually give up on the becoming a morning person all together.
