Why Owning a Small Business as a Mom Benefits Your Kids
•
Small Business Mom
I am an advocate for owning a small business as a mom. I am not saying it’s easy, especially if you have a retail space you need to go to everyday and manage. Being able to manage business and being a mom all at the same time takes lots mental space and time. If you make both work together (not perfectly), the benefits are rewarding.
Don’t Believe the Lies
I understand there are different family needs and situations and being a mompreneur is not for everyone. In this blog, I am speaking to those moms who were discouraged along the way and were given false information. The lies you were told and you believed them like I did. And they went something like this:
“You are going to ruin your family.”
“Your kids will never have a mom.”
“You are making a mistake.”
Please do not believe those lies. This is not truth and you shouldn’t allow it in your heart or mind.
A working mom is a better mom because she was called to work as a mom. That should be enough for you to know to go out there and hustle.
I Was the Weird Mom
Seven years ago, after I have baby #5, I started my business. I went against all mommy standards, leaving a new born at home plus four other little humans who were under nine years old. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing myself at that time. There were no other friends around me doing what I did and no support. I questioned myself, but yet still felt it was the right thing deep down inside.
I would ask:
“How do I do this?”
“How can I be a mom and run a business that takes me away from my kids?”
I started creating my own version of a mom in business. My kids went to the shop with me, nap times were missed, library visits during lunch breaks was the highlight of the day, Starbucks runs became our breakfast date, dinner was all hands on deck. The list can keep going.
Those were one of the most memorable moments for me and the kids.
Benefits of Owning a Small Business as Mom
Now that my kids are older, I can confidently say that I made no mistake opening a business as mom when my kiddos were babies. When I look back at our time, I can highlight three specific benefits of owning a business as a mom.
1. Quality time at home.
We think we need all the time in the world with our kids for us to spend quality time. Let me remind you: quality does not equal quantity. After coming home from work, you will find yourself trying to spend the best time with your littles. And those are the days the kids will remember.
2. Emotional connection.
Take your kids to work. Let them see what you do everyday. Have them meet the team. Once they get to experience your world, they will understand you on a deeper level when you sit down and ask about each other’s day.
3. Helping hands.
Moms, this is where your perfectionist self will need to be sacrificed. Once you have established a connection with your kids, they will start helping you around the house, make dinner if they are old enough and more. As they get older, doing business gets easier and your children also have experience how to live real life and become healthy independent humans.
If you are called, don’t hesitate becoming a mom in business. You will not fail your business or your family, I can promise you that.
