3 Things to Ask Before You Start a Small Business
•
Are You Ready to Start a Small Business?
Start a small business, they say. It’s going to be fun, they say.
For those moms who haven’t started a business yet, I totally understand why you choose not to go all in on to this entrepreneur thing. It’s a wild ride and you have to prepare for it.
The first stages of dreaming are the most blissful moments, but then comes the grind. The hard work! You slave away for a year or two, forget why you opened in the first place and before you know it, the doors are closed.
Looking for a Coach?
Are you looking for a business coach to help you thrive in your business? After spending seven years in my business and going through the thick and thin of owning and running a company as a mom, I have been able to come out and say it’s possible! Allow me help you along your journey. Message me here. I will get back to you with ways we can work together.
First Five Years
The first five years were the hardest years I had in business. Every year on January 1st, I would turn to my husband crying with no emotional reserve left in me, “This is so hard! I want to close down so bad!” He would hug me tight and gently remind me why I started this gig in the first place.
The first five years are the hardest and you will want to quit real bad. That’s why I want you to ask these questions. Now, not all business ideas may be as involved as mine, but this will prepare you for any type of business you may want to open, including a brick-and-mortar.
Are you ready?
How much time are you willing to spend working in the business weekly?
Moms, this is a real question we have to answer. We always talk about quality time with our kids and we bunch up quantity into this quality formula. But I want you to separate the two and really dig deep into the quality time you spend with your kids and set them as nonnegotiable hours. For me, it was bedtime and dinner. To this day we keep those two events in our day sacred. There is a certain peace we all feel when we get around the table together and the conversations we have at the bedside that I wouldn’t trade for anything! What is truly quality time you are spending with your kids? I am pretty sure it is not every hour of the day. Narrow that down to really see what hours you have in your reserve to spend on your business.
Are you financially ready?
Since day one, we have been running a debt-free business. It would be that much more stressful knowing I had another hefty bill to pay while trying to balance being a mom.
Have you researched what your start-up costs would be approximately?
Did you set money aside for the start-up costs?
Have you considered putting money away for any emergency situations that may come up?
Are you ready not to make money the first few months or years to keep the business debt free?
These are things I had to consider when I opened a business. I wanted to be as ready as possible, but it was not easy to learn for me as I really don’t like to budget. I am a big spender. Thankfully, my husband loves all things budgeting and he is there to help keep me accountable for all the spending I love to do. All the new kitchen appliances I want to get for my shop! I practice a lot of delayed gratification!
Why are you opening a business?
Moms, if you don’t have a purpose why you want to start a small business, you will close down on the first burnout.
Are you opening a side hustle to make extra money for your family?
Do you want to turn your passion into a career and share it with the world?
Are you trying to eventually replace your household income with the business so your spouse can then follow his/her dreams?
For my family, it was a few things. I loved all things kitchen, so we opened a food business because that’s where I come alive and I wanted to share that with the world. The second reason was for a career change for my husband. We really felt that it was time for my him to change careers, but we had no back up plan to replace his income, as he was the sole provider. We knew if I opened something of our own, we can eventually replace his income with our business. At that point he can start pursuing his passion. And that’s the step we are at now. This is a winning moment for our family.
I love what I do and my husband is pursuing his passion in ministry. Now we are living the dream! That’s our why. Find your why and stick to it.
These are just a few questions you may ask yourself and a great place to start preparing yourself for the long road ahead.
